Ballz Returns was a Sega Dreamcast remake of Ballz 3D also released on Playstation 2. It was developed by Gainax, the Japanese animation studio known for its work on Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as several other anime series. A prototype of the game was released at E3 in June 2001. The game became a fast favorite of press such as IGN, who described it as "the best 3D fighting game ever created".
